The First IEBA Meeting of 2011 was called to order by the Glorious Madame President Linda Carney at 1906.

December minutes were concisely reviewed by the Illustrious Former Secretary Linda Carney. The minutes were accepted as read and published.

Treasures’ report.

The Meticulously Accountable Treasurer Julie Watts disclosed that

Checking: $ 4,415.____,

Savings: $11,963.55,

Under Julie’s close scrutinization, a miss calculation of un submitted funds was noted. This accounted for late billings for packaged bees purchased in 2010 from one said Mr. Jerry Tate. The books will be established for 2011 and will be available for review during the next meeting. The report was accepted as presented and seconded. Membership dues were addressed and the great response during the meeting was appreciated.

The 4 Corner Reports:

North: 1. 9 hives were evaluated with 6 alive, candy and pollen patties were given. The hives that had passed were weak going into winter so this was not a surprise.

2. Positive report.

South: Had a person ask for dead bees, for holographic art for bees, and possible suspected satanic rituals

East: no reports.

West: strong and weak hives were put together

Fair Reports:

North Idaho: submitting forms, last week in August

Spokane County: There is going to be a fair. It will be 10 days long. Volunteers will be asked for as year progresses.

Old Business: none

New Business:

Budget: Reviewed the yearly budget for 2011. so that we can get this over all at one time and we will be able to discuss important stuff during the monthly meetings, and that the Treasurer can just take care of things. The Knowledgeable Ted Swenson presented the financial report using a fabulous display on the actual income/outgo for 2010 comparing it to the projected 2011 budget Details of the proposed projected budget for 2011 were outlined.

Discussion was held over the Teachers Kits needing to be refurbished. A committee will be established next meeting to work on this.

Discussion related to grant money for WSU students and lack of student involvement.

The projected budget was accepted and seconded.

County Code Committee: The Ever diligent Bill Watts reports that the update of proposed code. Revisions have been submitted, county has been is real receptive of the proposed revisions. It has been sent to the Legal department for review. After that it will be sent for public hearing. This is where our presence at the public hearing is vital. The public hearing is at date to be determined…..?1st week of March???

Discussion was held to give Bill the authority to proceed in matters without further consideration from the IEBA as a whole. Time is of the essences. This proposal was was accepted and seconded.

Classes:

First year: 99 registered for 2011 class, the aim is for more, first class set for 3/25, and volunteers are needed for first day.

Second year: March 18 & 25, April 1, at 1830-2030.

Others: Bob Arnold suggested that we consider possible purchase of a flat bed for WSU, working with a standard truck bed is difficult, even with a lift gate. A custom flat bed with spotlights and 2 tool boxes is about $3,500.

Some have had trouble with emails for notifications and announcements – there is currently no publisher so nothing is going out.

Joy in Bee Keeping aware nominees wanted, decision to be made by end of month.

Fair Reports:

Spokane County: The fact there was a fair has been confirmed, 9th-18th of Sept.

Joy of Bee Keeping:

2011 nominee and winner is Studious Leishalyn Ritch

Old Business:

County Code Committee: The Ever diligent Bill Watts reported on the proposed code. Disappointing news…difficult getting hold of Mr. Peterson taking 3 weeks, things have been pushed back to 2nd-3rd week April for public hearing.

New Business:

  1. Vern Stack displayed the New Zealand pygmy’ bee hives, which make excellent teaching hives, purchased from Better Bee for $60, Purchase of mini mites available for further cost. They do not come with foundation so you have to put it in. There are 3 kits in town, Duane, Kelly and the Carneys each have one. “What’s Buzzing?” still needs to be converted from VHS, to DVD. Wisdom from the lessons learned is ***DON’T GIVE HONEY STICKS TO THE KIDS, GIVE TO THE TEACHER***

  2. The Flat Bed for WSU truck is 8ft long 7’6’’ wide, lights in the back, solid head board, and will have the current Tommy Lift put back on. Single bid of $3,500, is felt to be reasonable priced. Motion was made use this year’s donation money for truck bed to a max of $1,000. A motion was made and further recommendations we go for $1 for $1 with WSBA. The motion was 2nd and approved by all.

  3. Scott Engalls encourages participation with the Farm Fair being held May 4th, & 5th, High school kids, 5-6 groups of kids that shuffle through (AM&PM). Occurs in the same place that the fair booth is held.

  4. Jerry Tate states that the WSU AG day is June 24th & 25th (0800-1600) great education and learning day, can open hives and poke around the lab.

Classes:

First year: 2 full classes of 75 people each (paid and registered) and a waiting list already started for 2012. Plan is for 1 teacher/10 students. Mr. Jerry Tate promised there will be enough teachers. Package Day April 16th, first field day is April 30th. New plan this year is to install packages in Westerns

Second year: March 18, 25, and April 1, at 1830-2030. The classes are planned for a sit down instruction, and focus on the more technical aspects of bee keeping, with lots of slides. Reminder to all 2nd year bee keepers, the 2nd year is the most difficult and greatest number of hobbyist drop out secondary to the negative experience.
