Meeting Minutes, October 8, 2010
Our meeting was called to order by President Ted Swenson.
There was no meeting in September because there was not a quorum.
Julie was not able to make the meeting so Bill Watt’s gave the Treasurer’s report. As of Oct. 6, 2010, we had $5000 in checking and $11,961.21 in savings. The report was accepted as presented.
The Fair Reports
Idaho- Kelly gave extra thanks to everyone who helped with the Idaho fair in CDA. Even with about 5000 less people at this year fair but they were still reporting $1718.75 as ending cash and $1669.10 after expenses.
Spokane- Roger also thanked all of the volunteers for the Spokane Interstate Fair. The numbers of fair visitors were also down this year. However, the Bee Booth was able to report $8881.20. This is just a little down from 2009.
4 Corners
E- Rick in Idaho said there is a ‘ton’ of orange pollen coming in.
W- Marty’s hive made a came back from nozema. It has 1 deep filled with honey.
N- Lot of knapweed is reblooming and the mullen is also coming in. There have been bears in Peone. Brian says his bees are doing well.
Jerry Tate said it’s time to requeen for some of the beekeepers. (Tate has some queens available and others may also.) It was also mentioned that WSU is having problems with mites.
IEBA bee yard
Bob Arnold said the IEBA honey has been pulled and it should be about 450#. The majority of the hives are in good shape. There are huge amounts of pollen. With 23 hives at the beginning they will end up with 15 hives going into winter. The yard has 4 new WSU queens and will be preparing for feeding and winterizing.
Old Business
Spokane County code revision. President Swenson asked for volunteers to talk with the planning committee and give to the county the revised code. Dave Evans, Daren, Bob, Jerry, and Joan will volunteer.
New Business
A motion was passed to sell the left over honey from the fairs for $51 a case to IEBA members and what is left will be given to a charity. Orders were taken at the end of the meeting.
The Washington State Conference is in Hood River on Oct 28, 29, and 30.
Our Thanksgiving Feast will be at our next meeting, November 12th. We will have a cooked turkey and a smoked turkey furnished by IEBA as well as beverages and ice-cream. Yummy yummy. Members are asked to bring a side dish or desserts or salads. Come hungry and ready to eat!! We will start from 6:30-7:00 The Christmas menu will have prime rib and turkey provided by the association. Yummy yummy again.
We then had varied discussions on several subjects. WSU has sent e-mails for volunteers to conduct a USDA survey on our member’s hives and they wish the members to give samples of hives for research. The “Non Profit – For Education and Research” banner which Kelly will research. The trailer to be used to carry the supplies for the fair booths, a “buy American- Made in USA” banner, what judges want to see at fairs, the Apiary conference is to be held in LA, and suggestions for sending out a reminder or a note a few days ahead of the meetings to remind members of the meetings , and various ideas thrown out to increase meeting attendance were just a few of the topics.
We will be eating November and December at our meeting, and then January is the “budget month”. So, for the next three months we will be having lots of activity at the meetings.
There was a motion to adjourn. President Swenson adjourned this meeting.
