To further the promotion of beekeeping and honey production, the IEBA manages two philanthropies through the Walt Peterson Joy in Beekeeping Trust Fund:
Walt Peterson Walt Peterson was an active member of the IEBA. As a matter of fact, he was one of the charter members, when the association was started. Walt was always trying to improve his apiary by raising his own queens. He was successful at this. alt also was very willing to sit down with any beekeeper and discuss the problems that the beekeeper may have. He always had a recommendation for the beekeeper. He was especially helpful to the new beekeeper. He was also a merit badge counselor for the Beekeeping Merit badge, before The Boy Scouts of America canceled the badge in 1997. He felt that the youth needed to get involved with beekeeping. Walt's wife, Joy donated funds to the IEBA , after his death, to start the Walt Peterson and Joy in Beekeeping Fund. The misson of this fund is to start new beekeepers.
